Earth Day, Indonesia, and Landsat

Earth Day, Indonesia, and Landsat

According to the Indonesian National News Agency, an environmental group called Sahabat Walhi (Friends of the Indonesian Forum for Environment) held a rally in Jakarta on Earth Day in an attempt to bring public attention to the problem of Indonesia’s rapid deforestation.

Using Landsat data, Sahabat Walhi was able to provide evidence that millions of acres of Indonesia’s tropical rainforest were being lost. Indonesia’s large expanses of tropical forest are considered some of the world’s most biologically diverse ecosystems, but deforestation caused by logging, agricultural expansion, fire, and human migration are driving many species to extinction.
