Kuwait - Oil Fire
Landsat 5 image of the Kuwaiti oil fires on February 22, 1991.
On February 26, 1991 Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein announces the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. The Iraqi soldiers set fire to Kuwaiti oil fields during their retreat. The oil fires, as seen here in this February 22, 1991 Landsat 5 image, are spewing thick black smoke into the air.
The Landsat 5 image above was created using TM natural-color image bands 3,2 and 1. This image falls on Landsat WRS-2 Path 166 Row 39.
