On April, 22, 2025, NASA celebrated Earth Day as only NASA can: with beautiful imagery of our home planet.
In preparation for the day, Heather Hanson, Deputy Manager for the Science Support Office/NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, had the idea to turn turning the popular Your Name in Landsat interactive into a poster. Kevin Miller, a senior graphic designer at Science Support Office/NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, reached out to the Landsat team to make that vision a reality. The creators of the interactive—Ross Walter, creative technologist, and Allison Nussbaum, Landsat outreach specialist—were more than happy to help. The images on the Landsat website are optimized for viewing on a screen, but Miller needed higher-resolution versions for a print product. Walter and Nussbaum created pan-sharpened Landsat images from scratch for the letters in “Earth Day” (as well as in the Spanish version “Tierra”). Walter and Nussbaum also provided names of all the locations represented in the images, which are displayed on the back of the poster. The Landsat satellite images were sourced from NASA Earth Observatory, NASA Worldview, USGS EarthExplorer, and ESA Sentinel Hub.
Your Name in Landsat creates a personal connection between users and NASA imagery, inspiring users from across the globe to explore Earth’s diverse surface from space. As of May 1, the interactive has accumulated over 1 million page views. The Landsat Communications and Public Engagement team brought Your Name in Landsat to the 2024 The Geological Society of America Annual Conference and the 2025 Commodity Classic, where attendees were able to take home personalized print-outs of their names in Landsat letters. High-resolution versions of each letter are available for download from the Your Name in Landsat image gallery.
