Your Name in Landsat at GSA

Your Name in Landsat at GSA

September 22-25, 2024, Allison Nussbaum from the Landsat Communication and Public Engagement team supported the NASA booth at the Geological Society of America (GSA) annual meeting at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

At the conference, Nussbaum interacted with hundreds of attendees, providing information and hands-on materials to highlight the benefits of Landsat for geological studies. Handouts included Landsat Next one-pagers, mission timeline rulers, Echo the Bat books, Landsat activity cards, the 2021 Earth Science Week poster, and Landsat’s Enduring Legacy bookmarks. Also featured at the booth were QR codes to access to additional online resources including the Landsat Societal Benefits eBooks and the Landsat Science News digest newsletter.

The main highlight of the Landsat table was Your Name in Landsat: a new online interactive where users can type their name into the text field to produce a downloadable graphic of that name spelled out in Landsat imagery of Earth’s surface. Initially launched solely as a web app in August 2024, Nussbaum used a dye sublimation printer to provide over 400 GSA attendees with a personalized 4” x 6” print of their name in Landsat imagery. Because this product was both personal and highlighted the beauty of Earth’s surface, reception of the effort was outstanding.

Nussbaum also presented a Hyperwall talk at GSA titled, “Mapping the Blue Planet with Landsat,” where she discussed how 52 years of Landsat data have enabled scientists to study water both as a natural resource and as a force of change.
