Lab on Radiance, Reflectance, and Spectroscopy for college undergraduates

Fall Semester 2023 — Matthew Fagan a professor at University of Maryland ran a lab using STELLA taking students through the world of sensors and reflectance.

Outside they took irradiance data of ten different surfaces (grass, concrete, asphalt, etc.) using STELLA. They then looked at the spectral signatures and learned to start thinking spectroscopically. They did this by identifying dark and light materials and seeing the fluctuations in the near infrared and discussing.

Inside they learned about light scattering using increasingly milky bottles of water and discussing. Then they measured the leaf and some spectralon to learn about reflectance and discuss.
